Independent Travel: Pros and Cons Compared to Travel Agencies

Independent Travel: Pros and Cons Compared to Travel Agencies

Organizing a trip can be an exciting experience, but choosing how to do it can become a real dilemma. Do you prefer total autonomy or the security offered by a travel agency? In this article, we will explore the advantages and disadvantages of organizing trips independently versus relying on travel agencies.
If you’re looking for more tips on organizing your trips, read the other articles on this blog. You’ll find many posts about everything related to organizing trips independently.

Advantages of Independent Travel
Direct Contact with Providers

One of the main advantages of independent travel is direct contact with travel service providers.
This means being able to negotiate directly with hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions, often getting better and more transparent deals.
Direct communication eliminates intermediaries and allows you to know exactly what you are purchasing.

However, during the phases of organizing a trip, the biggest difficulty will be finding the necessary information to choose and contact the final providers to turn to.

Example: once the destination of the trip is chosen, you need to:

– Choose the type of accommodation
– Find and read reviews and, based on those, choose the facility to rely on.

Very often this phase is not at all simple. Reviews are not always reliable and, even in good faith, what one tourist likes may not be as pleasant for another. Sites like Booking.com or Tripadvisor are valuable sources to draw from but not always reliable and satisfactory.

At this point, it will be necessary to find:
– phone number
– email address

It’s not always easy to find this information. It may seem strange, but very often, local operators (including hotels) do not clearly post their contact details. The main reason is the total delegation of customer care to OTAs.

Once the contact information is found, you need to have:
– communication skills (in case the destination does not speak your language)
– negotiation skills and knowledge of possible purchasable options.

So, finding the information necessary to organize trips independently is the main obstacle to overcome.

Economic Savings

Organizing a trip by yourself can be significantly cheaper than using a travel agency. Agencies apply commissions for their services, while by booking directly, you can take advantage of the best rates available online. Moreover, you can choose cheaper accommodation and transport options that fit your budget.

Autonomy and Planning Freedom

Traveling independently gives you complete freedom to organize your itinerary according to your needs and preferences. You can decide when to leave, where to stop, and how long to stay in a place. This level of flexibility is particularly valuable if you want a trip that is personalized and tailored just for you.

independent travel

Disadvantages of Independent Travel
Lack of Assistance

Organizing everything by yourself can be stressful, especially if something goes wrong during the trip. Travel agencies offer customer service that can quickly solve problems and unforeseen events. Without this support, you will be responsible for managing any difficulties yourself.

Insurance and Coverage

Travel agencies often include insurance packages that cover services, cancellations, and other unforeseen events. When traveling independently, you will need to arrange adequate insurance yourself, which can be an additional cost and concern.

Recovery of Expenses in Case of Disruptions

In case of disruptions, such as canceled flights or hotels that do not match the description, travel agencies can assist you in recovering expenses and managing complaints. Organizing the trip by yourself, you will have to deal with these issues directly with the providers, which can take time and energy.

The Importance of Information

Regardless of the method chosen to organize your trip, it is crucial to have all the necessary information before leaving. Planning ahead and knowing the details about accommodations, transport, attractions, and local culture can make the difference between a stressful journey and a pleasant experience. Avoid buying services blindly and make sure you have a well-defined plan.

Discover Triplannerr: Independent Travel with the Community

If you love to travel independently but want the support of a community, Triplannerr is the social network for you. Triplannerr is based on the altruistic sharing of information among travelers. Users can publish detailed “Travel Reports,” sharing experiences, useful contacts, and valuable advice.

The goal of Triplannerr is to democratize travel by making information available to everyone to organize a trip without intermediaries. The Triplannerr community supports each other, enriching the database with real and useful data, easily accessible to anyone who wants to explore the world independently.

Conclusion

Traveling independently offers numerous advantages, such as saving money and the freedom to organize your itinerary, but it also involves the need to find reliable information and manage any problems on your own.

Travel agencies, on the other hand, provide assistance and security but at an additional cost.

The choice depends on your personal preferences and specific needs. Always remember to plan carefully and make use of available resources, such as the Triplannerr community, to make your trip an unforgettable experience.

How to Use TripAdvisor

How to Use TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor has established itself as one of the most influential sites in the tourism sector, offering users powerful tools to plan perfect trips.

This post delves into the details of the TripAdvisor site, highlighting its unique features and providing tips on how to make the most of them.

Overview of TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor provides reviews, advice, photos, and tips on hotels, experiences, restaurants, and flights from a vast community of travelers.

Its strength lies in the wealth of information available, which helps users make informed decisions.

How to Use TripAdvisor

How to Use TripAdvisor: Using Filters to Find the Best Accommodation

Searching for accommodations on TripAdvisor is simplified by using filters that allow you to select options based on price, location, available amenities, and user reviews.

These tools are essential for narrowing down your search to the perfect hotel that meets your needs.

If you think you already know how to use TripAdvisor, I recommend carefully experimenting with these filters: you’ll discover that you can improve your experience and manage to find better solutions for your trip.

You’ll make your choice much more consciously.

The “Don’t Know When to Go?” Feature

This innovative feature helps users discover the times of the year when the desired accommodation has the lowest price. By integrating this information with annual weather conditions, users can plan their trip at the most advantageous and comfortable time.

“Things to Do” Page

The “Things to Do” section is a treasure trove of information on attractions, tours, and experiences. Filters for categories, ratings, and type of activity allow you to customize your search.

A tip is to carefully read the reviews and look at the photos posted by travelers to get an authentic idea of the experience.

“Restaurants” Page

This segment of TripAdvisor is crucial for food lovers. It allows you to discover the best restaurants nearby, filtering by cuisine type, price range, and rating.

Reading recent reviews can provide an overview of the food and service quality.

“Flights” Page

Searching for flights on TripAdvisor allows you to compare prices and schedules between different airlines.

Tips for use include checking date flexibility and exploring alternative airports to get the best rates.

I recommend repeating your flight search using other tools available on the web. In this blog, you will find many other articles on this topic. I suggest you read: “How to Use Skyscanner” and “Use Google Fly to Fly Around the World.”

“Vacation Rentals” Page

This feature allows users to find unique accommodations, from apartments to villas, offering more privacy and space.

It’s advisable to read reviews and verify the location to ensure it matches your needs.

“Travel Stories” Page and Triplannerr

While TripAdvisor offers reviews and photos, the Triplannerr project goes further, allowing travelers to publish detailed “Travel Reports,” including travel stories and useful information to organize itineraries autonomously.

These reports are enriched with geolocated photos and direct links to Google Maps, promoting an exchange of information based on altruism and solidarity.

Triplannerr’s Travel Reports gather on a single page all the information needed to organize your trip autonomously.

“Reviews” Feature

On TripAdvisor, users can write reviews, post photos, and add new places, contributing to the site’s wealth of information.

Compared to Triplannerr’s “Travel Reports,” these reviews offer a more direct and personal approach to travel experiences.

Conclusion and the Triplannerr Project

TripAdvisor remains an indispensable tool for travelers. However, the Triplannerr project introduces a new way of sharing travel experiences, based on community and free sharing of detailed and useful information, without intermediaries.

Triplannerr not only facilitates the organization of trips autonomously but also promotes a sense of community among travelers, who help each other by sharing their experiences and advice.

How to Leverage Apps and Online Services to Plan a Trip

The transition from an era in which only travel agents had access to certain information to the present day, where every traveler can be an expert, has been revolutionary.

An internet user who knows how to use Google to conduct searches quickly learns how to leverage apps and online services to plan a trip and is capable of independently carrying out almost all the tasks that were once delegated to “professionals”.

Apps and online services have democratized travel planning, making it accessible to all.

A digital revolution that has slowly transformed the tourism sector as well as the habits of travelers and tourists.

Today, thanks to apps, websites, and the provision of services that make what was once the job of travel agencies easy, all travelers have very powerful tools at their disposal that a few years ago made the intermediation of “professionals” mandatory and “do it yourself” impossible.

Today, everyone knows (well or poorly) how to use apps and online services to plan a trip and can do so thanks to a macrocosm of websites, apps, and e-commerce that sell all the necessary services.

Triplannerr: Revolutionizing the Way to Travel

In the landscape of these digital innovations, Triplannerr emerges, a social network aiming to transform travel organization.

The underlying idea is simple but powerful: allow travelers to share useful information and advice, eliminating the need for intermediaries.

On the social network, users publish their “Travel Reports”, detailed guides based on their lived experiences, useful to those who wish to retrace the same adventures.

This approach based on sharing and altruism opens new possibilities for planning authentically personalized trips, thanks to the collective knowledge of the community.

Triplannerr offers various subscription profiles, including Traveler, Travel Maker, Travel Blogger, and Travel PRO, creating a complete ecosystem for travelers, by travelers.

Google Guide: Your Guide to the Perfect Trip!

Planning your trip has never been easier thanks to Google Guide, a versatile and powerful resource offered by Google. If you haven’t yet read my posts on how to use Google Maps to plan a trip and how Google Maps can become an alternative to Booking.com, let me tell you that this post completes a journey that, through the tools provided by Google, enables you to plan and organise trips entirely on your own. In this article, we’ll explore in detail how to use this tool to optimise your travel search and make your itinerary flawless.

What Google Guide Is and How to Access It:

Google Guide is your virtual guide to exploring destinations, discovering points of interest, and planning your trip. To access it, open the Google Maps app on your device and make sure you’re logged into your Google account.

How to Make the Most of Google Guide:

Customise Your Itinerary: you have complete control over customising your itinerary. You can add points of interest to your personal list and organise your days as you wish. Simply navigate using the map and discover the points of interest you’ll find along the way. At the same time, you can modify your itinerary to avoid all the places that don’t interest you. Real-Time Reviews and Photos: Browsing through the map, you’ll find images uploaded by other travellers. Attached to their images, they will have also left their reviews that you can use to make informed decisions. Moreover, using this tool, you will have access to Google’s business listings, museums, attractions, and get updated information in real time on opening hours and local conditions.

SEO Advantages of Google Guide:

Do you know what SEO is? The acronym stands for “Search Engine Optimization.” The entire web is organised according to keywords. Google’s search engine works by indexing the “keywords” we use to search for what interests us. So, all of Google’s tools work in the same way: when you perform a search by entering keywords, the results you get back are consistent. Keyword Optimisation: Google Guide is designed to meet your travel needs. Take advantage of its keyword optimisation, providing results relevant to your searches. Personalised Local Experience: Experience a customised local guide based on your preferences. Google Guide can suggest authentic places recommended by locals. Real-Time Updates for Local Conditions: Stay informed with real-time updates on traffic, opening hours, and more. Google Guide keeps you up to date with the latest data.

Finding Activities and Useful Information:

Google Guide assists you in finding intriguing activities and essential information about your destination. Optimise your search for activities, museums, restaurants, and more, for a seamless travel experience. When you start your search by entering keywords, and each time you refine your search by entering new ones, this tool responds by showing increasingly relevant results. Example: Planning a trip to Paris for a romantic weekend getaway. Your first search might involve “romantic restaurants.” Once you’ve got the results, you might refine your search by entering “restaurants with traditional French dishes.” Finally, you might add a further search key with the keyword “escargot.” Each time, this tool will show you more relevant results and the listings of activities and places to visit along your itinerary.

Google Guide vs. Traditional Travel Agencies:

Customising your itinerary is completely in your hands, and by using the capabilities of this tool, it will be easy for you to find the information (and contacts) that until recently constituted the competitive advantage making travel agencies indispensable. You’ll be able to directly contact all the final service providers you need and avoid having to use (and pay for) a professional to plan your trip. If you’re bold enough and have the courage to take responsibility for the success of your travel plan, you’ll have everything necessary to do without the help of an agency.

Conclusions:

Google Guide is your essential resource for planning a tailor-made trip. Make full use of this digital guide to discover new places, plan custom itineraries, and turn your trip into an unforgettable experience.

Using Google Flights to Fly Around the World

Using Google Flights

Google Fly is an online flight search tool that helps you find the best airfares based on your travel needs.

Launched in 2011, this service simplifies the search for the best market deals for travelers planning a trip.

In this article, we’ll explore how Google Flights works, how to use it to plan trips and choose destinations, how to save on flight prices, and the differences between this tool and a traditional travel agency.

Additionally, we’ll provide some tips for making the most of Google Flights and finding the best deals. Along with Google Maps and Google Pay, it becomes the ideal tool for organizing your trips in total autonomy.

  1. How Google Flights Works

Google Flights uses a sophisticated algorithm to analyze flight data from various sources to find the best flight options based on users’ needs.

Users can enter their departure and destination cities, travel dates, the number of passengers, and other preferences like travel class and flight times.

The search engine will then display a list of available flight options with real-time prices and schedules.

Additionally, users can use advanced filters to narrow down their search based on different criteria such as the number of stops, preferred airline, travel duration, and maximum price.

Google Flights also provides suggestions on the cheapest days of the week to fly and tips on saving on airfare prices. In summary, Google Flights is a quick and efficient tool for finding the best airfares on the market based on individual user needs.

Using Google Flights
  1. How to Use Google Flights to Plan Trips and Choose Destinations

Google Flights not only helps users find the best airfares but also serves as a useful tool for planning trips and choosing destinations.

Users can enter their departure city and leave the destination field blank to view an interactive map showing flight prices to various destinations around the world.

Additionally, users can use the “Explore” feature to search for popular destinations based on their preferences, such as the time of year, preferred activity, and available budget.

Google Flights also provides information on the main attractions of the chosen destinations and flight prices for each period of the year.

This way, users can conduct a more in-depth search on their preferred destination and find the best combination of flight and accommodation to meet their needs.

In summary, Google Flights is a versatile tool for planning trips and discovering new destinations based on personal preferences.

  1. How to Save on Flight Prices with Google Flights

Google Flights offers several options to save on flight prices.

Users can use the “Flexible Dates” feature to view flight prices based on the days of the week and month of departure, allowing them to choose the best time to travel and obtain the most affordable fares.

Furthermore, users can use the “Flexible Dates Price” option to find the best rates within a selected date range.

Google Flights also provides a “Price Forecast” option, which shows the likelihood of flight prices increasing or decreasing in the coming weeks, enabling users to plan their travel based on flight price trends.

Additionally, users can subscribe to price notifications to receive alerts when flight prices drop or rise. In summary, Google Flights is an effective tool for saving on flight prices, offering many options to find the best rates and monitoring flight price trends over time.

Using Google Flights

  1. The Differences Between Google Fly and a Traditional Travel Agency

One of the main differences between Google Fly and a traditional travel agency is the ability to plan your trip independently. With Google Fly, users can search for flights, choose destinations, and save on flight prices without having to pay commissions or agency fees.

Moreover, Google Fly offers a wide range of options to customize your search, while traditional travel agencies may only show a few selected options.

However, traditional travel agencies also offer services such as vacation packages, hotel reservations, and car rentals, which are not available on Google Fly.

Additionally, travel agencies provide personalized assistance and support in case of problems during the trip, while with Google Fly, users must manage any issues or unforeseen events on their own.

In summary, Google Fly offers more autonomy and customization in trip planning compared to traditional travel agencies, but the latter provide additional services and personalized support during the trip.

  1. Tips for Using Google Fly Effectively and Finding the Best Deals

To make the most of Google Fly and find the best deals, it’s important to consider some tips. Firstly, users should use the “Explore” function to discover new destinations and find the most affordable fares.

Secondly, users should be flexible with their departure and arrival dates, using the “Date Flexibility” option to find the cheapest flight prices. Additionally, users can save on flight prices by choosing the cheapest days of the week to fly.

It’s also crucial to monitor flight price trends using the “Estimated Price” option and subscribe to price notifications to receive alerts when flight prices drop or rise. Finally, users should conduct searches in incognito mode or clear their browsing history to prevent flight prices from being increased due to online activity tracking.

With these tips, users can maximize their use of Google Fly and find the best flight deals.

Using Google Fly: Conclusion

In conclusion, Google Fly is a useful tool for online flight search, allowing users to find the best airfares based on their travel needs. It offers many options for customizing searches and saving on flight prices, such as date flexibility, price notifications, and flight price trends.

Additionally, Google Fly is also an excellent tool for planning trips and choosing destinations based on personal preferences.

However, as we have seen, there are some differences between Google Fly and traditional travel agencies, such as the lack of additional services and personalized support during the trip.

With helpful tips like using the “Explore” function and clearing browsing history, users can take full advantage of Google Fly and find the best deals on flight prices.

In summary, Google Fly is an effective tool for finding the most affordable airfares on the market and planning customized trips independently.

Covid Restrictions: Where Can You Travel?

Covid restrictions are the most used search keyword on Google and all search engines by tourists and travelers. After many months of constraints and prohibitions, finally, some countries have removed the Covid restrictions that prevented travel for tourism.

The news that gives us hope today (September 21, 2021) is that the largest country in the world (U.S.A.) has finally removed the Covid restrictions on travel for tourism, and it will be possible to enter the country by showing a vaccination certificate and a negative swab test.

Great news that encourages optimism and rekindles the hope of a return to normalcy. All travel enthusiasts hope to soon return to a reality where travel between nations and continents will again be free from all Covid restrictions.

Waiting to find serenity in a world where we will once again be free to travel to all countries, we must consult the laws, regulations, and norms in force in the country from which we depart and in the country we wish to reach.

Covid Restrictions: how and where to find information on the current regulations?

Every country in the world has been hit by the pandemic and since 2020 travel for tourism has been banned in many countries.

For a long time, air connections (and with all means) were suspended and for some terrible months many nations in the world have self-isolated, preventing arrivals and departures.

Travel for tourism was banned and in many cases, you could only cross the borders for “work”, “study”, or “health” reasons.

Now that the U.S.A. has removed the Covid restrictions, we can hope that many other nations will adopt the same measure and that we can return to normalcy as soon as possible.

But how to find out if it is possible to travel to the chosen destination? How to be sure to have accurate information regarding the Covid restrictions in force?

Social networks are flooded with conversations in which travelers exchange news but, as often happens, you find conflicting information that too often turns out to be wrong and unreliable.

Let’s see what are the certain sources where you can find the necessary information to undertake travels avoiding setbacks or, in the worst case, the possibility of being blocked at customs and having to give up on the trip.

Covid Restrictions

Covid Restrictions: Websites to Consult from Italy Ministry of Health

The first website I recommend consulting from Italy is that of the Ministry of Health, where you can easily find the lists of countries (A, B, C, D, E) with their respective Covid prescriptions in force.

From the very beginning of the pandemic, countries have been placed on lists based on the spread of the virus on their territory and the chances of getting infected by traveling to their territories based on the contagion rate and the number of infected.

The lists are still used to distinguish countries based on the conditions of virus spread in their territories and regulate incoming and outgoing travel.

Let’s see what the Covid restrictions are for traveling to the countries on the lists:

Group A (Vatican City and the Republic of San Marino) no Covid restrictions are foreseen, not even the presentation of the Passenger Locator Form. Group B: Countries where you can move without any reason, even for Tourism. Group C: Countries where you can travel (even for Tourism) provided you have not been (in the 14 days prior) in Group D or E countries. Group D: even just “transit” in one of the countries on this list obliges the traveler to a series of requirements, the most important of which are:

  • Presentation of the Passenger Locator Form
  • Molecular or Antigenic swab within 72 hours before arrival at customs
  • Presentation of the Vaccination Certificate In case of failure to present the required documentation, a fiduciary quarantine of five days is foreseen.

I recommend reading the details of the Covid prescriptions in force on the Ministry of Health’s website.
Group E: In these countries, it is not possible to travel for Tourism.

Entering or leaving Italy requires justifying the travel and proving that it is motivated by one of the reasons for which travel is allowed: Work, Health, Study.

I recommend reading the details of the Covid prescriptions in force on the Ministry of Health’s website. There are specific Covid restrictions for some countries not on the lists: Japan, Canada, Brazil, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka.

I recommend reading the details of the Covid prescriptions in force on the Ministry of Health’s website.

There are Covid Tested Flights that are regulated with specific regulations that I suggest you evaluate based on your particular needs.

Travel Safely

Immediately after the Ministry of Health’s website, the Travel Safely website is the one I recommend you consult before setting off on your journey.

This site also provides accurate and reliable information on the Covid restrictions in force. Consulting it before setting off on a journey is of utmost importance.

You will find all the updates on the measures taken by the Italian government regarding the Covid restrictions in force. Among the first information available, you will find the link to download the App Immuni, which, despite the failure, is still considered an “essential” device for travelers.

Immediately after, the site advises to travel with the “Green Pass” which, although not recognized by all the countries of the world, is useful for movements within the European Union borders. On the “Green Pass” page, you will also find a very useful sitography with all the references to laws and decrees in force.

The “Travel Safely” site also indicates the lists of countries in groups A, B, C, D, E with the specific provisions for each list.

Covid Restrictions

Touring Club Italy

The website of Touring Club Italy has recently published an article titled: “Coronavirus and travel: where Italians cannot go” that I recommend you consult because it contains a very useful list of all European states and many non-European ones with the detail (state by state) of the Covid restrictions in force (entry and exit) and with useful references to the government websites of all the states.

It’s really very useful: you just need to search the list for the country you want to travel to find immediately described the Covid restrictions in force and the references to the institutional sites of the governments that have issued them.

The description of the Covid restrictions and how they must be executed is well done and detailed, and the presence of institutional links offers you the opportunity to verify and contact the relevant bodies in case of necessity.

Skyscanner

The most popular site among more experienced travelers (which I talked about in my post dedicated to how to buy airline tickets) and always in search of new destinations to reach has added a very useful page entirely dedicated to the Covid restrictions in force.

Using the Skyscanner website is simple and intuitive and is the best I recommend you consult if you want to quickly find information on the Covid restrictions in force in the country you have chosen as your travel destination.

You can choose the country from which to depart and the one to arrive in. You will immediately see four different lists (Low, Moderate, High, and Unknown restrictions) what are the Covid restrictions in force in over 160 countries (those where it is possible to fly with airlines).

Moreover, the function that allows you to choose the country of departure as well as the country of arrival gives you access to information related to all countries in the world!

Therefore, in addition to the information related to travels departing from Italy to other 160 countries, information (and the Covid restrictions in force) for departures from any of the countries in the list to all the others are also available.

In practice, you have access to a database with information on all the Covid restrictions in force in the world!

Covid Restrictions
Europa.eu

If instead of traveling by plane you use other means, I recommend you consult the Europa.eu website, where you will find detailed guides on the Covid restrictions in force for travelers arriving and departing by ship, train, bus, or with their own means.

Vueling

Vueling has also added a function similar to that of Skyscanner with the possibility of inserting any country of departure and arrival and immediately viewing the Covid restrictions in force.

Airlines Websites and Google

Almost all airlines’ websites have followed Skyscanner’s example and offer the possibility to view the covid restrictions in force between the countries connected by their flights.

EasyJet , for example, offers the possibility to refine the search by declaring to be “fully vaccinated” and therefore only viewing the Covid restrictions in force for those who have already received the vaccine. Compared to the Skyscanner site, it offers the visualization of countries by colors and gives a more immediate idea of the situation. To find detailed information, it is necessary to click several times, but the site is still useful and easy to use.

Google

Simply searching for information related to the trip you want to make can sometimes be enough to find everything you need. For example, Norway has published a very useful guide for all tourists intending to visit the country: Visitnorway.it  is in Italian, easy to use, and very useful!

Covid Restrictions: Conclusions

The situation of Covid restrictions worldwide is constantly evolving, and we will have to live with it for a long time.

We must learn to find the information and be prepared for any requirement necessary for departure and to complete the journey safely.

All countries, airlines, tour operators are already committed to making the necessary information for traveling immediate, correct, available, and useful.

Just as we got used to anti-terrorism measures after the September 11, 2001, attack, we will get used to those necessary to contain the contagion.

We will return to travel as and even better than before!

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps: Uncovering Its Full Potential

Planning a journey using Google Maps is a brilliant idea. But are you fully aware of all the functionalities this free tool offers?

Many have used the free Google App, which allows access to an immense database of all the roads and places in the world, as a powerful instrument for planning routes, finding information, and as a satellite navigator.

However, not everyone is familiar with all its features and the enormous potential packed in this App.

I’ll briefly discuss the basic functions (which you’re probably already familiar with) to focus on the “hidden” ones that make a difference and turn Google Maps into an indispensable app for independent travelers.

The basic functions are incredibly useful when you plan a journey using Google Maps. Directly from your smartphone, you can:

  • Choose and select a route to reach your destination.
  • View the map in various modes, prioritizing “satellite view,” “map view,” or even use “street view.”
  • Find information on leisure and commercial activities along your planned route.
  • Evaluate different route options, considering border crossings, toll roads, or particularly scenic stretches.
  • Choose to display options for completing your itinerary by car, on foot, bike, or using public transport.

These functions are extremely useful when planning a journey using Google Maps, and most of us only utilize these.

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps: Unveiling the “Hidden” Functions

Yet, Google Maps conceals other potent functions that can turn a novice traveler into a professional, crucial for the success of a journey organized independently.

Maximizing the capabilities of this free tool will transform you into a real professional in travel organization.

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps: Using the “Nearby” Feature

The Google App is far more powerful than Booking.com and TripAdvisor when it comes to finding what you need in your vicinity.

The function is straightforward: Google Maps knows your location and lets you search (using the “nearby” function) for Hotels, Restaurants, Bars, and Pubs.

After conducting the search, a map will appear with Google “pins” marking the exact locations.

But there’s so much more you can do! In fact, if you type a different word in the search box, the App will provide positions (and information) related to the searched category.

Thus, Museums, Gyms, Banks, Government Offices, and any other information necessary for travel planning can also be searched for.

Planning a Journey Using Google Maps: Offline Use

Traveling might lead to situations where you don’t have an internet connection. In such cases, the functionalities of Google Maps would be unavailable.

However, you can save maps (or the map portion of interest) on your smartphone to consult Google Maps even without an internet connection.

You can use your smartphone to view maps, utilize the navigation function, and receive directions as if your phone were connected to the network. How is it done? After selecting a location and displaying it on your smartphone screen, press the location name at the bottom and slide it upwards. A series of options will appear, including “Download.”

Now, select the map portion you’re interested in (where you know you’ll be without connection) and download it to your smartphone. By default, it should be stored on your SD card, but check your smartphone settings to ensure it doesn’t occupy too much internal memory space.

Now, Google Maps will continue to function and provide directions even when your phone isn’t connected.

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps: Using My Google Maps

Do you have a Google account? Then, you can access Google My Maps and use all the (free) functions available! Just follow the access link after logging into your Google account.

The functions available to you at this point are numerous, and the potential of this application will immediately become indispensable for planning a journey using Google Maps.

Here’s what you can do with Google My Maps:

Create custom maps of your travels and save them in Google Drive (as well as in My Maps and on your PC) and share them with anyone simply using a link or even embed them on your website using an embed code.

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps

Add all the locations of your journey to the maps, customizing the “pins” or replacing them with ideographic icons that you can differentiate in graphics and color, to which you can attach descriptive notes and comments.

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps

You can create various layers of your map, dedicating each layer to a specific use. I usually make four:

  • Daily stops and hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Activities to do
  • Curiosities and points of interest

Here’s an example of the result you can achieve by selecting only one layer at a time:

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps

In this layer, I’ve included the main stops of my journey.
Planning a Trip Using Google Maps

In this other layer, I’ve included only the road directions.

Then there are restaurants, hotels, activities to do.

For each position (pin) added to the map (or corresponding layer), it’s possible to insert notes with remarks and useful information to fully enjoy the travel experience.

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps

In addition to “notes,” each position added to your map can be customized by changing the “pin” graphics using ideographic icons or altering its color. You can also associate photos with each position (before, during, and after the trip) to visually capture the memory or reminder.

Therefore, it’s possible to link your photos to the points you’ve marked with “pins” on the map in Google My Maps and share it with whoever you want!

Another incredible functionality at your disposal allows you to “import” other maps (created by you or shared by other users on Google) and overlay your notes and positions selected by you onto those of a friend or another traveler who has decided to share their experience with the Community.

The “import” function allows you to import images, maps, and all information from Drive, Google Photos, or directly from your PC into the map you’re creating or using to narrate your trip.

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps

Using the “import” function, you can import into a new project (new map) the information you created for a previous trip in the same area. For example, if you want to modify the itinerary or the activities to undertake, you can use the same restaurants you visited on a previous trip.

If you’re planning a trip to places you’ve already been, you can import the layer where you saved the hotels from a previous trip and use the same hotels for another trip dedicated to different activities.

Soon, using Google My Maps, it will be possible to find and contact “local guides” who will provide support and assistance for visiting the city where they reside (free or for a fee). The service is currently being rolled out only in some cities around the world, like Tokyo and Los Angeles.

Another functionality at your disposal allows you to measure distances between cities (as the crow flies or following the itinerary), obtaining all the partial kilometers (with a simple click of the mouse).

Planning a Trip Using Google Maps

This feature proves very useful when you need to calculate walking distances. I recommend proceeding as follows:

  1. Create another layer in your map dedicated to walking routes.
  2. Overlay the walking routes layer on top of the one with the hotels.
  3. Plot the walking paths and measure the distances.
  4. Save the layer and keep it ready for when you’re traveling!
Planning a Trip Using Google Maps

You can create a layer for each city or for each of the activities you intend to carry out during your trip or in that particular city.

The function to measure distances, combined with the one to plot walking routes, is extremely useful for organizing city tours or planning outdoor activities like trekking.

Planning a trip using Google Maps is a great choice, especially after you’ve learned to use all the potential it offers.

How to Choose a Trip Destination

How to Choose a Trip Destination?

Travel Maker is a blog where you can find advice, tips, and tricks to organize and plan trips and vacations while avoiding any form of intermediation. However, don’t forget that the professionalism of Travel Agencies and Travel Agents should never be underestimated, and organizing a trip independently is a job that requires dedicating time and effort to this activity. Don’t improvise.

The choice of destination should be made considering these parameters:

  • Motivation
  • Budget
  • Available Time
  • Type of Trip
  • Travel Companions
  • Activities to do once you arrive at the destination

Based on these parameters, you can start to evaluate possible destinations and, following a long process of selection and elimination, you will choose the destination of your trip.

Let’s see how to proceed:

How to Choose a Trip Destination: Motivations

There are Tourists, Travelers, and Vacationers. Which category do you fall into?

  • Tourists: travel for pleasure and fun
  • Travelers: are in search of discovery, adventure, and the knowledge of new places and new cultures.
  • Vacationers: travel (or stay) for Relaxation, to have fun, and to live a break from the daily environment.

When you start the process that will help you decide how to choose the destination of a trip, the first thing you should think about is the real reason that drives you to leave.

The expectations you have for your trip can be disappointed if, in choosing the destination, you do not consider the real reason that drives you to leave.

The destination you choose must, first of all, be able to satisfy your needs as a Tourist, Vacationer, or Traveler.

If you’re trying to plan your trip independently, the first thing you should think about is the real reason that drives you to leave and choose the destination of a trip based on the real reason that compels you to reach it.

How to Choose a Trip Destination

How to Choose a Trip Destination: The Budget

If you thought about opening an atlas and choosing your trip destination by pointing a finger at random, I must tell you right away that it will be your biggest mistake. When you are engaged in planning a trip, one of the main factors you must consider is your budget: it’s pointless to spend on intercontinental tickets if you don’t have enough resources to support your stay and carry out your activities once you arrive.

It often happens that people underestimate budget management, relying on information collected from friends or wandering the web. The final result can be disastrous! To understand how to choose the destination of a trip, you must first consider all the expenses to be incurred and evaluate if the available budget is sufficient.

How to Choose a Trip Destination: The Available Time

How many days can you dedicate to your trip? One of the first things to do is to develop your itinerary. You need to calculate the time required for transfers and the time you will spend carrying out the activities and experiences you have decided to live. You must take into account your schedule and the days you have available.

If a destination is too far away or if the time at your disposal is limited compared to the program you wish to realize, you will have to choose a different destination. Stubbornly wanting to reach the dream place is not a smart attitude. It’s pointless to reach a distant (and perhaps expensive) destination if then you will not have the time to visit it or you will not be able to carry out all the activities you have planned. Imagine going to Niagara Falls and then realizing that you do not have the time to visit the entire park in its entirety and limiting yourself to watching the falls from afar. You risk returning home with a bitter disappointment!

How to Choose a Trip Destination: The Type of Trip

Not all destinations are suitable for the type of experience you want to live. Making the mistake of choosing a trip destination unsuitable for your program can ruin the experience for you and all the people who have joined your project.

Imagine wanting to camp and reaching a place where it is not possible to sleep outdoors, or wanting to visit a city to live the nightlife and then, once there, discover that the city sleeps peacefully at sunset.

You must think about choosing the destination also based on the type of trip you want to make! Would you organize a Safari in New York? Of course not!

How to Choose a Trip Destination

How to Choose a Trip Destination: Travel Companions and Activities to Do During the Trip

Before thinking about how to choose a trip destination, you should consider the type of people who will accompany you. Are you traveling with children? It’s better to avoid adventures and extreme sports! Are you bringing your family? You’ll need accommodations with suitable services. Are you traveling alone? Can you adapt to any situation? Do your travel companions enjoy eating at restaurants, or are they content with a fast-food sandwich?

The choice of your travel destination must also align with the needs and expectations of the people traveling with you.

It’s pointless to go to London if your travel companions want to go trekking! These are extreme examples to give you an idea, but you must consider this aspect in the planning phase of a trip. The choice of destination is crucial and determines the success of your travel project.

How to Choose a Trip Destination: Activities to Do Once Arrived.

Do not make the mistake of choosing the destination first and then the activities you will perform during the trip. If the purpose of your trip is to visit Museums and monuments, you should choose a destination where you will find a rich cultural heritage. If, on the other hand, your favorite activity is practicing outdoor activities, you will have to choose your destination among places where nature is the main feature of the environment. Too often, tourists and travelers are disappointed because, once they arrive, they don’t find their favorite activities to do. This happens because destinations are chosen based on their fame, notoriety, or the promotion made by tourist operators, and the details that should have priority are neglected.

The mistake you risk making is choosing the destination for its fame or your desire to visit it, only to realize, after arriving, that your favorite activities cannot be performed there.

Returning to the example of a Safari in Africa: you can’t expect, at the end of the day, to find a SPA to relax in the middle of the Savannah!

How to Choose a Trip Destination

Other Aspects to Consider When Choosing a Trip Destination: Travel Period and Season in the Country You Want to Visit

One of the most challenging things to implement when choosing a trip destination is aligning the days we have available to travel with the best possible time to visit a country. Especially when undertaking intercontinental travels, it’s easy to face a drastic climate change (and time zone difference) that must be absolutely considered in the choice of destination and the time you want to visit it. Summer in Europe coincides with winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Visiting the tropics during the Monsoon season is not a wise choice, and if the time we have available coincides with the worst time to visit a destination, it would be wise to reconsider our travel plan and think about that destination again when we can reach it at the best time to visit.

It’s very important to research well on the actual weather conditions you will encounter and come prepared for what awaits you. Even more crucial is to be aware of the climate you’ll find in relation to the activities you want to perform.

Language Barriers

Again, the desire to visit a far-off country and the urge to fulfill a dream should not take over. Too often, we take it for granted that English is spoken everywhere we go. Often this is not the case, and more often, our English (we Italians are clumsy) is incomprehensible.

Spending all the time trying to make oneself understood is not pleasant. Even ordering at a restaurant can be a big problem. So, even if you have studied English, consider the difficulty you might encounter traveling in a country on the other side of the world.

Passports, Documents, Visas, and Vaccinations

Want to fulfill your dream? Before buying tickets, make sure you are well acquainted with the regulations and necessary documents for the trip! In some countries, an entry visa is required, in others, vaccinations are needed before departure. Sometimes having an ID card is not enough, and you need a Passport. Sometimes there are different rules regarding the state of the Passport (free pages for visas) and its validity (some require at least six months of validity before expiration), so you might have a valid Passport but not suitable for entry into those countries.

Other documents to check before choosing a trip destination include any mandatory Insurance, Consulate permits, and, if traveling by car or motorcycle you own, all the specific documentation related to the vehicles.

So, if you are busy choosing a trip destination, you also have to take bureaucracy into account!

How to Choose a Trip Destination

Safety

Do not neglect to gather all the necessary information about the economic, social, and political situation of the countries or cities you plan to visit. You’re planning a trip for fun and relaxation. Why risk ending up in a situation that could ruin your stay or even put you in danger?

An economic crisis, demonstrations or strikes, events, or situations of social crisis can spoil your stay, your trip, your holiday.

You must inform yourself about the real situation in the place you intend to reach.

I advise you to do two main checks:

  • Consult Google. Look for information by consulting the websites of local media.
  • Check the “viaggiare sicuri” (travel safely for Italians) website, where you can find all the information for each country and highlight the risk areas.

I advise against traveling to destinations where your safety is not guaranteed. However, if you choose to ignore my advice and travel to a risk destination, I suggest registering your trip on the “Dove Siamo nel Mondo” (Where We Are in the World) website.

Let Yourself Be Inspired

Choosing your trip’s destination is the first step towards a new adventure that will forever remain in your memories and will probably be your only chance to experience life in a distant country.

Once you’ve chosen your likely destination, avoid institutional sites and look for the information you need on alternative channels.

Travel stories, photos, or videos: use the internet to fall in love with your destination. You should arrive at your destination with all the necessary information to live your travel experience to its fullest potential. Read travel diaries, view photos, and use YouTube and Google Maps to also visually explore the places you will visit. This way, you’ll arrive prepared and already know where to go or have discovered unknown destinations or places of particular interest to you.

Movies and documentaries: do you know how many people went to Thailand after watching “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio?

Books: I suggest going to a bookstore (if you can detach yourself from Amazon) and browsing the books in the travel sections. You’ll return home with many dreams in your drawer!

  • travel economically
  • travel freely and without constraints from predefined programs
  • have maximum autonomy in managing time and transfers

11 Checks to Perform Before Setting Out on a Journey

To travel peacefully and to avoid unpleasant mishaps, your car must be in perfect working order.

You will be far from your home, and dealing with a repair might not be as easy as when you are in your environment and can count on your trusted mechanic.

Moreover, the discomfort and time lost due to a breakdown of your car would ruin the holiday.

The most correct procedure is to take the car to a workshop and have a check-up: all necessary checks will be carried out by a qualified technician, and any problems will be highlighted before departure.

However, if you’re reading this article, that’s not the solution you were looking for. If you’re here, it’s because you want to avoid the mechanic’s check-up and inform yourself about the prescriptions you must adhere to face your journey by car. Let’s see what the 11 checks to perform before setting out on a journey are:
